Landscape painting

Landscape painting has always been an expression of closeness to nature and the attempt to bring the beauty of the world into the four walls at home. But even this art movement was always subject to the spirit of the times.
Paintings with landscapes as their own subjects only came into fashion relatively late, in the 17th century. Before that, the landscape in paintings had always been subordinate to the main motif, usually heroes of ancient mythologies. In the Netherlands in particular, landscape painting became an art movement all of its own, with experts in the various types of landscape.
The heyday of landscape painting with a high degree of iconicity was mainly Romanticism and Naturalism. Both depicted mostly constructed landscapes looking as realistic as possible. Romanticism focuses on the longing for nature and the return to it in the often slightly dreamy paintings. While Romanticism often bears religious and nationalistic traits, whereby one should bear in mind that the nationalism of the 19th century was a different, far more progressive one than that of later centuries, the focus of Naturalism is on nature itself and, similar to Realism, only includes man as a pictorial object for social criticism. As such, naturalism and realism have a certain intersection that makes it difficult to strictly separate the two styles.

Exactly opposite to the landscape painting of Romanticism and Naturalism is that of Impressionism. The Impressionists always depicted real places and scenarios, but attached little importance to a painting style with a high degree of iconicity. Rather, they placed the play of light and color in the focus of their works.
