British artist Derek Hare knows and loves the coasts of this world. With every high sky that arches over a low horizon, the desire arises in Derek to capture exactly this scenery. Derek Hare was born in the North East of England. During his childhood, the coasts of Durham and Northumberland accompanied him. The North Sea, whose face alternates between rough spray and blue sea, has grown a love for this unique form of landscape. The sea and the sky of his homeland were the first motifs Derek Hare painted. The passion that grew from this has not diminished to this day. The artist finds inspiration in his travels. The Atlantic coast of Portugal, the Bahamas, India, the Seychelles and even the island of Fehmarn are among the destinations of the internationally successful artist. His atmospheric landscapes are often compared with the works of William Turner and Caspar David Friedrich. With his work, the artist has created a unique collection of the most beautiful coasts of these and has never tired of following his drive.
Derek Hare lives in London most of the time. He has found a constant in his life with the city. It was here that he established himself as a professional artist, returning here after spending time abroad. After his training, the artist moved to the Channel Islands and subsequently to Scandinavia and northern Germany. In each place he painted the coasts and exhibited in local galleries. He was a traveller, the sea attracted him magically. Experiencing the different moods, the smells, the colours of the landscape and the different textures develop into a unity that is unique to each coast. The crashing Atlantic on a rocky coast forms a stark contrast to the shallow seascape of the Bahamas, flooded with light. The artist is drawn to depict the individual and characteristic light scenes of the different regions. Derek Hare is constantly on the lookout for new variations on the colour combinations that the sky and the sea offer him.
Derek transfers onto canvas the emotions that the beauty of the landscape evokes in him. His colour palette is his strongest means of expression. Derek Hare uses only four or five colours when painting. He enjoys the exciting possibilities offered by the reduced choice of colours. By substituting just one color, a completely different world of representation opens up to him. Some colours belong to the artist's standard colours. The seascapes and cloudy landscapes are carried by the shades of blue. In contrast, the effect of the dusty pink sky in Indian Rajasthan is almost spherical and strong contrast.
