The fact that Édouard Manet is regarded as a pioneer of modernity is not surprising. His painting "Eisenbahn" does not show a train, as one might expect. Here you can see mother and daughter in front of a green fence. The reading mother looks questioningly at the viewer directly in the eyes, the little girl, however, is seen with her back and holds with her hands to the metal rods of the fence. Only over their steam and tracks is the train in the background to make out. Otherwise, the natural togetherness of mother and daughter, which is arbitrarily taken from everyday life, the dominant theme of the painting. Obviously fascinated, the child as well as the viewer looks towards the steam locomotive. The mother, however, is torn from her reading for a moment, in her arms a sleeping puppy rests. Beautiful blue tones, even the mighty bow, dominate the color palette.
