Three hunters and their dogs are walking through a snow-covered landscape. A picturesque village and a handful of people in front of a campfire in the background, in front of them a vast nature and cheerful grouping of people on a frozen lake. Winter trees that are completely bare from foliage steer in the direction of the hunters and animals. The composition is precisely thought out. This oil painting created Bruegel the Elder in the cycle of paintings illustrating the four different seasons. The unique capacity of the German master painter to capture nature and scenarios is particularly evident here and is therefore not in vain one of his most popular and well-known works. Far beyond the usual 15th-century painting, Bruegel creates a character study within a landscape painting and knows how to convey the complex composition in a harmonious way. Even the bright green of the sky in contrast to the cold white of the snow is amazingly alive: it's like feeling the cold. The original is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
