The "Mona Lisa" is probably the most famous painting in the world and almost everyone knows a lot about it. Here are a few facts that you may not have known before: - The name of the image is the result of a spelling mistake. Correct would be "Monna Lisa" (= "Mrs. Lisa") or the Italian name "La Gioconda". - Both titles go back to the name of the supposed model: Lisa del Giocondo. - In 2012, a copy of the painting was discovered by restorers in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, probably by a pupil of Leonardo. The copy is much better preserved, the colors brighter and the details sharper. - The figure and the background have different vanishing points and Monna Lisa's eyes do not look exactly in the same direction. The viewer is irritated by this, without being able to grasp the exact reason.
