After learning to appreciate Impressionism in Paris, Vincent van Gogh wanted to find the "cheerful colors of the South" in Provence. Arles was originally supposed to be only a stopover on the way to Marseilles, but van Gogh decided to stay and after a while rented a studio and painted 187 paintings within sixteen months. It was his most productive creative phase, as well as the one in which his characteristic style emerged. The painting of the garden in Arles embodies exactly what held the artist in the city: the colorful nature, which he heals in an impressionistic painting style. The time in Arles also marks the beginning of the end: Here in December 1888 came to that dispute with Paul Gaugin, van Gogh of both physical and mental never recovered.
