Paula Modersohn-Becker has a distinctive style. Her characters always look lifelike and authentic. The painting "Two girls with blue and white dress" focuses entirely on the characters of the two children. Woken up, the smaller girl from the middle of the picture looks into the viewer's eyes. His big, dark eyes look equally open and questioning. The witty red bow placed in her hair adds an extra accent that skilfully sets off from her dense, black hair. It is interesting how the Worpswede artist assigns roles to the two children. Evidently, the girl to be seen from the side holds the hand protectively around the smaller one in the foreground of the picture. Her expression is thoughtful, her eyes go down. Thanks to the connection between the children, the girl in a blue dress dares to contact the beholder. As a representative of Expressionism, Modersohn-Becker only needs a few areas of color for the face, hair, arms and clothes.
