The Great Wave in front of Kanagawa is considered one of the most famous Japanese works. It is a color woodblock print by the artist Katsushika Hokusai and belongs to the series of pictures "36 Views of Mount Fuji". The great wave seems to want to devour with its power the fishermen who are helplessly exposed to the stormy sea. The image has an impressive dynamic that brings out the contrast between the transience of human life and the imposing nature. The shape of the line between the sky and the sea shows the symbol of yin and yang, thus reflecting on the contrast between the light, heavenly forces and the dark, earthly ones. The number of originals probably amounts to several hundred. They are more than 180 years old and show differences in the colors: The color of the sky varies from yellow to pink and on some prints the clouds are not visible. Because of the different colors and the wear of the wooden blocks, no two prints are alike.
