The Norwegian landscape painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl studied in Copenhagen and later worked as a professor at the Dresden Art Academy, where he also painted a large part of his paintings. At times he also lived and worked in his native Norway, Rome, Naples, Paris and Brussels. He was also a close friend of another eminent Romanticist: Caspar David Friedrich. Particularly noteworthy in the painting "Shipwreck on the coast of Norway" is the very realistic representation of the water, in which pay the detailed nature studies of Dahl, because hardly anything is as difficult to paint as surfacing waves. Rather uncharacteristic of a painting of Romanticism is the rather threatening basic mood, which expresses less love of nature and longing than reverence for nature.
