In his impressively realistic paintings, the Dutch universal genius Jan van Eyck achieved a naturalism with unprecedented myths. All sorts of materiality and material qualities were meticulously masterfully worked out, no matter whether his motifs included reflective glass, human skin, decadent clothing or decorative ornaments. As a contemporary of the early fifteenth century, unlike his artist colleagues of the early Middle Ages, he enjoyed high status at the king's court and was well aware of his distinctly esteemed position by signing all his pictures and providing them with personal mottos. Van Eyck's painting and thoughtful boldness pave the way for the artists' move from mere crafts to celebrated celebrities. The mysterious symbolism and the rarely reached technical level of his artworks ranked him on the art historical tracks to one of the most famous Gothic painters worldwide.
