The artist Jan Vermehr created the painting which is currently known under the name "The painting art". The work was repeatedly called different, so it had titles like "De Schilderkunst", "Allegory of painting" or "The artist in his studio". The painting captivates through light and shadow of the highest quality and is therefore considered one of the artist's major works. It presents an interior scene with interesting details, to which many interpretations are attributed. At the center of the painting is the artist. The model is in the vanishing point and is accentuated by the incident light masterfully. Holiday, silence and seclusion characterize the painting. Through the sensuality of color, the artist creates an atmosphere of harmony and elegance. In order to reproduce interiors exactly, Vermeer used various technical aids, presumably also the forerunner of the modern camera, the cameraobscura.
