American Gothic is a painting painted by artist Grant Wood in 1930. It is his best known and most popular work. The image is one of the most frequently staged and quoted images in US pop culture. Many artists have cited this image by exchanging the man and woman for known personalities and / or replacing the house in the background with well-known houses. For example, in the Rocky Horror Picture Show by Richard O'Brien referred to and in the opening credits of the television series Desperate Housewives you can see it. It also occurs in a series of the animated series The Simpsons, as well as in the television series Dexter. In 2001, Sophie Matisse painted a painting with the same title, on which she spared the people originally portrayed. There is also a movie titled American Gothic inspired by the picture.
