With this winter landscape, Claude Monet captured a moment that could scarcely have been more picturesque and symbolic at the same time. The glistening morning sun on the white snow lets the viewer feel the cold. This feeling is underlined by the bluish shadows that correspond with the icy sky. The house wall and the chimneys contradict the frost theme with complementary yellow tones. Also in the crowns of the trees it seems to be warmer. The black and white magpie is in the myths of many countries a mediator between the worlds. She warns the people entrusted to her of dangers like wolves or approaching villains. Here she sits on the fence, and even more: even on the gate between the icy winter landscape and the warming protective areas of the courtyard. Titled is this picture simple and factual with "The Magpie", but it could have been called "Guardian" or "Between the Worlds".
