Romanticism  ·  Landscapes

As so often, Caspar David Friedrich captured a beautiful landscape in this painting. As the title suggests, it is the representation of a section of the Giant Mountains. This mountain is located on the border of the Czech Republic and Poland. Since these countries are very strongly influenced by Christianity, it is also possible to explain the only building that is recognizable in the picture. It is a church, more precisely the bell tower of those.

Before the view wanders to the imposing mountains in the background, however, the viewer's gaze falls on the lush green meadows in the foreground. The artist has painted a large open space in beautiful green here. There is hardly any vegetation on this area. Except for some bushes and shrubs, the dark green meadows remain free from further growth. Only further back, where almost the elevations of the Krkonoše Mountains begin and the church was built, are larger wooded areas next to yellow fields and meadows recognizable. Whether these colors were created by the sunlight or possibly cereals are grown there is not assessable.

The majority of the picture, however, takes the mountain range, which is located behind the yellow fields. Tightly wooded peaks line up and pile up on and on. Directly in the middle of the picture a smaller mountain can be recognized, which still shines in a strong green. The further the mountains are in the background and at the same time appear to be higher, the worse the color is perceptible. The individual peaks are criss-crossed by fog. As a result, the farthest crests are only dimly recognizable. However, the highest peak towers far into the light blue sky so that it almost crosses the end of the screen. Whether this mountain is the highest peak of the Giant Mountains, the Schneekoppe, is not quite sure, but it is hardly surprising. Whether this assumption is correct or not, an influence on the captivating impression of the picture hardly has.
