The painting Liegender Akt (reclining nude) dates from 1886 and shows a young man lying naked on a staircase, his eyes closed. It is not clear to the viewer whether he is asleep or in a half-awake or dream-like state. Half lying on a staircase, half lying on a plateau, only bedded on a cloth, exposed and bathed in bright light. Baca-Flor has captured an in-between moment in this painting, the viewer gets no hint of a before or after and even the staircase seems to end with the plateau in nothingness. He shows a moment of innocence and youth, the transition of a youth into manhood.
Carlos Baca-Flor was a South American painter. Born in Peru in 1868, he grew up in Chile from the age of one. He became best known for his portrait painting. In 1890 Baca-Flor moved to Paris, where he died in 1941.
