"You get, as desired, a picture to dream. It must seem so quiet that it frightens when knocking is made, "Böcklin wrote to the client of the first version of his island of the dead. The much more popular third version of the picture was made by Böcklin three years later for his gallery owner Fritz Gurlitt, who was also supposed to be responsible for the title. In 1936 the painting was acquired by Adolf Hitler and hung both in the Berghof on the Obersalzberg and in the New Reich Chancellery. Ironically, the fourth version was destroyed in a bombing raid in World War II. A mythical island of the dead as well as a boat trip to the hereafter exist in many mythologies and religions: the primeval mound in ancient Egypt, Elysion in Ancient Greece, the Garden of Eden in the Bible or Avalon in the Arthurian legend.
