It is the first self-portrait of this kind: Twenty-six-year-old Albrecht Dürer painted himself confidently in front of an open window through which a landscape can be seen. Until then, self-portraits have been embedded in historical scenes or executed against more neutral backgrounds. Rarely were they too, portraits as putting in-scene of the own person actually only came up with Albrecht Dürer's works, previously one painted other persons. Dürer wanted it like this: In this picture he should be the main character, together with a landscape. The painting was created in a period in which the artist incorporated the motif of the Alps, which had fascinated him on a journey, into several works. In addition to the will to the new, the self-portrait with gloves reveals the artist's enthusiasm for fine fabrics and details. From the hat to the shirt to the gloves - every fold, every embroidery, every seam sits.
