In a magnificent hall with an expansive chandelier and huge mirrors, men in pointed uniforms and women dine and parade in the finest robes: Adolph Menzel's 1878 oil painting "Das Ballsouper" offers an almost intimate view of a festival on the imperial court from a slightly elevated position. With his ascent to professor and senator of the Royal Academy of Arts, the native Breslauer and electoral Berlin also got into the so-called better society. His detailed account of the upper middle-class ball guests contains quite caricature appeals. Left in the foreground, an officer struggling to handle plates, cutlery, headgear and more reasonably manier. The generous decollete ladies may not all remain on the delicate chairs: Is already a dance partner in sight? It seems to the viewer of the picture that he hears the voices of people in the crowd that is largely turned towards him. Menzel's masterpiece is located in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
