Modernism

What Art Nouveau was in Germany and the Secession in Austria, Modernism was in the Spanish province of Catalonia and especially in Barcelona. In connection with this artistic reform movement, we can also speak of Catalan Art Nouveau. It had its heyday in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. It was led by Antonio Gaudí and promoted by the upper middle classes of Barcelona. They wanted to make their city new and contemporary, but at the same time according to Catalan tradition.

Modernisme affected all areas of art, but manifested itself particularly clearly in architecture. Gaudí was commissioned by various industrialists with designs for buildings that are now an integral part of Barcelona's cityscape (e.g. Casa Battló, Park Güell). His most famous project is the Basilica Sagrada Família in Barcelona, begun in 1882 and still unfinished today. Gaudí developed his own distinctive style inspired by nature and the shapes and surfaces found in it. Characteristic is the abandonment of straight lines.

Other exponents of Modernism were the painters Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusnol, Miquel Utrillo and Pere Romeu. Their meeting place was the coffee house and cabaret Els Quatre Gats ("The Four Cats"), designed by them and opened in 1897, where they discussed and organized exhibitions. All the important "modernists" were guests here.
