Modern Photography

Not only pure documentation characterizes the motivation and subject matter of photographers. Where design plays the greatest role, the point of view becomes important, colour plays a fundamental role and the motif develops into an object of meaning. Traditional photography with its portraits, landscape and natural light images, and finally the image conceptions of photojournalism are also the basis for modern photography, which uses new technical means and methods to open up new modes of representation. Since the documenta 6 exhibition in 1977, photography has also finally established itself as part of contemporary art. Digitization played its part in this. The possibilities of image expression increased to an unimagined extent from 1980 onwards. Image editing programs, as a new medium, provided for infinite forms of design. They made the use of technical aids such as different lenses or individual work steps such as screening or multiple exposures superfluous. In modern, contemporary photography, documentation and staging can often be identified as inner pictorial content: Representations of things or living beings that are in context with each other and thus make up the image statement. Stagings in particular can usually be characterized as artistic photographs. On the other hand, there are photographs that are characterized by abstraction of the pictorial content, e.g. vortex images. They are characterized by the evocation of impressions or emotions. These pictorial works are created through the use of special production methods, which are not photographs in the true sense of the word. Concrete photographs" are also artistic results of a process in which the photograph itself, however, remains the object of interest.
