Mannerism

Mannerism refers to a form of art history during the late Renaissance in Italy, which primarily includes architecture, sculpture and painting. But also literature and music are to be mentioned in this context. This art movement is characterized by the use of all technical possibilities for extreme representation, which emphasize the personal style of the artist. The term mannerism is not only used in an art-historical sense, but is also used universally. The term "mannerism" means that something is perceived as pathetic or artificial. In 1520, with the death of Raphael, the era of the High Renaissance ended in Italy and Mannerism developed. Italian works of art, which were created from this time until the next turn of the century, belong to this style. It was not until the middle of the 16th century that this art movement began in Germany, Flanders, France as well as the Netherlands.

It is in painting that this artistic style is most pronounced. Compared to the High Renaissance, space and pictorial structure are profoundly changed here. Abrupt perspectives, the deformation of the natural model, difficult figure constellations in concave spaces as well as asymmetry are characteristic of this style. In the works, the figures are often depicted with small heads and elongated. The color scheme is restless and contains strong light-dark variations. Jacopo Robusti and Jacopo da Pontormo are among the representatives of this style. The Spaniard El Groco formed his own characteristic style of expression.
