Landscapes

Landscape painting, as an established genre of representational painting, encompasses both the depiction of natural landscapes and other cultural landscapes - such as cities and architecture, industrial plants and garden art.

Although early frescoes in antiquity show hints of landscape interpretations, of which unfortunately almost nothing survives, landscape painting was meaningless in the early days of the painting arts.
It was not until the end of the Middle Ages that the perception and significance of landscape changed for people and henceforth moved into the art world as an art form in its own right. The effort to depict the natural environment in its special character as faithfully as possible found increasingly dedicated artists who devoted themselves to this genre of art. The new, aesthetic view of the environment and landscape reflected the zeitgeist of a new perception and appreciation of the world in its time, which one wanted to capture in this new art form.

With the onset of the Renaissance, a new understanding of the world then emerged and an effort to explore the world scientifically developed. This supported the further development of landscape painting and in particular the exploration of perspective modes of representation. In addition to linear perspective, the study of central perspective and aerial perspective developed. Technical aids were also used, such as the camera obscura, to further develop perspective representation in painting.
The development of oil painting then opened up further possibilities of the finest color gradations and more brilliant colors, translucent glazes allowed a new and lifelike representation of the natural play of light and shadow.

While at the beginning of the 17th century heroic, idealized landscapes based on ancient mythology and the world of the Bible were still predominant, this century also saw the emergence of a variety of new subjects in landscape painting with the rise of Dutch landscape painting and a wealthy bourgeoisie in demand of art. The genre soon fanned out into a variety of new thematic representations - from mountain, forest, seascape and coastal landscapes to fanciful artistic landscapes. In this century, landscape painting developed into a completely independent art genre, which now also completely abandoned the depiction of human figures and scenes in the landscape structure.

Find here with us the most beautiful and expressive, high-quality art prints of all eras of landscape painting and be inspired by the radiance of the works of art.
