The painter Tiziano Vecelli is one of the most famous representatives of Venetian painting of the 16th century and is known as "Titian". Already at the age of nine years he began his education as a painter in Venice. Ennobled by the emperor and appointed court painter, he succeeded in demonstrating his versatility and extraordinary diligence. He developed into one of the most successful painters of his time and - in contrast to other contemporaries - achieved fame already during his lifetime. Titian mainly created portraits and paintings of landscapes. In his works he dealt with myths and religious themes.
Characteristic of the painting of this epoch is the striving to perfect the representation of the human body. Titian was also one of the pioneers of his guild in this respect. Moreover, in the course of his creative work he developed a special feeling for the selection of his colours. A testimony to both can be found in one of his major works "Venus von Urbino". Titian was one of the first artists to add a signature to his works. His life's work and his uniqueness were not only transmitted to posterity through his paintings, but were also echoed in the works of his numerous students. When the plague raged in Venice in 1576, Titian was one of the victims of this disease.
