Ryuryukyo Shinsai

    1799   -   1823
Asian Art   •   Wikipedia: Ryuryukyo Shinsai

It is little known from the life of Ryuryukyo Shinsai. He was born at the end of the 18th century and was only 24 years old. In this short time he has managed to make a name for himself as a painter and printmaker beyond the borders of Japan. The artist developed the name from the Japanese word for walking as a symbol for leaving his teacher Hokusai and following the example of his predecessor with his teacher. Ryuryukyo received his first attention for the design of Kiby?shi, a kind of Japanese picture book. Later, the prolific painter created still lifes and devoted himself to the depiction of beautiful women, which he portrayed in the style of his master.

Shinsai adopted a special form of woodblock printmaking. Surimonos were a kind of greeting cards, which were given to family and friends on special occasions. Shinsais made the small holding prints in a square form. Famous is the work Carp among pond plants, which radiates a special artistic expression with its detailed drawing skills.
Br/> The western style reached Japan and influenced the artistic work. Shinsai created two series of completed landscapes that represent a symbiosis of western and eastern art. The use of perspective, the construction of depth and different levels in the painting, unusual in Japanese art, were brought together very harmoniously by Ryuryukyo Shinsai.
