As a miniaturist and engraver, Nicolas Robert was an outstanding painter of the Baroque period. Robert focused his attention on the illustration of botany. Nicolas Robert specialized in meticulous zeal for the perfect imitation of nature, placing his focus on this distinctive feature of Baroque painting. His extraordinary powers of observation, based on his own fascination with the beauty of nature, gave him the decisive talent to depict motifs in a very differentiated and realistic manner.
With his early works, which were mainly devoted to motifs of floral species, Nicolas Robert gained a growing reputation. His illustrations in a book, which the Duke of Montausier had made for his future wife, helped Robert achieve the notoriety that would define his future, artistic work. This book brought the talented artist to the attention of the Duke of Orleans, who commissioned a series of paintings of flowers and brought him to the attention of the French King Louis XIV. This circumstance ensured that Nicolas Robert was hired by King Louis XIV as a royal painter of miniatures, where, on royal commission, he immortalized the fauna and flora of the royal gardens in his paintings. Imagine the challenge at the royal court of the dazzling Sun King, which was bursting with splendor and beauty and seemed almost overloaded with pomp, to paint motifs that corresponded to the striving for beauty and elegance of the time and should also leave the spoiled viewers of the time in amazement and admiration. Nevertheless, Nicolas Robert was up to the challenge, because he knew how to capture the simple beauty of the animal world and especially the plant world in such a way that the simple beauty, springing from nature, came into its own.
