This circumstance ensured that Nicolas Robert was hired by King Louis XIV as a royal painter of miniatures, where, on royal commission, he immortalized the fauna and flora of the royal gardens in his paintings. Imagine the challenge at the royal court of the dazzling Sun King, which was bursting with splendor and beauty and seemed almost overloaded with pomp, to paint motifs that corresponded to the striving for beauty and elegance of the time and should also leave the spoiled viewers of the time in amazement and admiration. Nevertheless, Nicolas Robert was up to the challenge, because he knew how to capture the simple beauty of the animal world and especially the plant world in such a way that the simple beauty, springing from nature, came into its own.
