Born on October 17, 1796 in Markt Piesting, Leopold Kupelwieser conquered the art world as a gifted Austrian painter. A mixture of royal portraits, sacred frescoes and intimate utilitarian painting characterized his diverse artistic style, which crossed the boundaries between high art and everyday art. In our exquisite fine art prints inspired by his masterpieces, this unique blend of Kupelwieser's talent is vividly captured. Kupelwieser, son of Johann Baptist Georg Kilian Kupelwieser, co-owner of a tinware factory, and Maria Josepha Judith Gspan, his extraordinary talent was recognized at the age of 12. His artistic path began with an education at the Vienna Academy under the direction of Franz Anton von Zauner. Kupelwieser initially saw himself as a follower of Viennese Classicism, but during a stay in Rome in 1824 he was strongly influenced by the Nazarenes around Friedrich Overbeck. Back in Vienna, he established himself as a respected portrait and history painter and was also appreciated for his utilitarian painting.
In the more intimate circles of Vienna, Kupelwieser was known as a member of the "Schubertians", a circle of friends around the famous composer Franz Schubert. The Schubertians often spent their summers at Atzenbrugg Castle, and Kupelwieser created many portraits of the group members during this time, including Schubert himself. His honorable college career included positions as corrector and, from 1836, professor of history painting at the Vienna Academy. Later, in the 1840s, Kupelwieser increasingly turned to religious motifs and fresco painting. Leopold Kupelwieser died in Vienna on November 17, 1862, but left behind an impressive artistic legacy. Our art prints of Kupelwieser's works are a testament to his mastery of painting, and offer the opportunity to enjoy a piece of this exceptional art in your own home. Whether it's portraits of royalty and artists or his inspiring sacred frescoes, each art print carries the distinctive style and technique Kupelwieser masterfully used in his work.
