Let yourself be transported into the world of the Danish master painter Laurits Regner Tuxen, who was born in Copenhagen on December 9, 1853 and breathed his last there on November 21, 1927. Tuxen was one of the most important figures in the art world of his time. As a sculptor, portrait, history and landscape painter, he embodied the diverse output of the Skagen painters. Now his finesse is brought to life anew through the high-quality art prints of his works, which occupy a special place in our offer. Tuxen, the son of naval officer Nicolai Elias Tuxen and his wife Bertha Laura Giødvad, had a desire to become a marine painter. At a young age, he entered the Copenhagen Royal Danish Academy of Art, where he received his training in landscape and marine painting under the guidance of Holger Drachmann and Vilhelm Kyhn. Tuxen was considered one of the best students of his time, which led him to try his hand at portrait painting. Sketchbooks filled up during his study trips to London, Brittany and Paris. He was especially inspired by the studio of Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat, where he studied in the winter of 1875/76 and from May 1877 to October 1878.
He made his artistic debut in 1875 with a work depicting the rugged charm of the west coast of Jutland. It showed a lifeboat full of fishermen trying to reach a stranded ship in stormy weather. From 1878 to 1913, his works were regularly on display at the Paris Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. But Tuxen's work went far beyond painting. In 1882, together with his friend Peder Severin Krøyer, he founded the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in Copenhagen, an alternative art school in response to the traditional Danish art academy. Laurits Tuxen had a special flair for depicting the aristocratic and regal. He painted for royal houses and princely courts of Europe and produced impressive large portraits, such as the 5 × 7 meter painting of King Christian IX in the circle of his family at Fredensborg Castle. But he also immortalized Queen Victoria and her family, as well as Nicholas II and Alexandra Fedorovna of Russia.
In addition, Tuxen was a member of the Skagen Painters, an artists' colony known, especially in the 1880s, for its open-air painting and its departure from the academic conception of art. He bought a property in Skagen and had the architect Thorvald Jørgensen convert it into a stately summer home, which he named "Dagminne." Here Tuxen painted scenes of family, friends, landscapes, the sea and garden flowers, which are now enjoying a new era of appreciation in the form of art prints. Tuxen, the seventh and youngest scion of a wealthy family, was married twice and had four daughters. He died shortly before his 74th birthday and was buried at Copenhagen's Vestre Kirkegård. Today, his legacy remains alive through the multitude of his works, especially his extraordinary art prints, inspiring subsequent generations of art lovers.
