The Englishman Julian Barrow was a famous painter and globetrotter who found a second home in America. He combined his passions of travel and painting and designed over 1,000 different city views, landscape scenes and country houses worldwide. He had a great gift for capturing light conditions in his paintings. He loved to capture the architectural features of buildings in his paintings. People rarely stayed in his city views - if they did, they were only visible in the distance. Julian Barrow was described as a humorous, self-ironic and extremely gentle person who loved art.
He was born in the summer of 1939 in a small English village called Dacre. Here he spent a wonderful childhood in the country. Early on, little Julian was already painting. At the age of six, he was just starting school, he could hardly be dissuaded from drawing. He spent every free minute with his beloved hobby of painting. The talent was probably inherited from his mother, Margaret MacInnes, who was a well-known painter. His father was a successful lawyer. As a young adult Julian moved to London. To earn a living, he sold his paintings at the Victoria Embankment, a street along the Thames, which is very popular with tourists. The first painting brought him just £2.00. He met famous painters and his works became more famous in London.
An important step in his career was certainly the job offer from the National Gallery. On site he was restoring a collection of Irish paintings. After that, he received more and more new commissions - among them were also portrait commissions from well-known London citizens of the upper class. His increased income enabled him to finance his first trips. In 1965, for example, he travelled through Lebanon via Syria and Jordan to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, the painter organized an exhibition to finance his return journey via Turkey and Greece. In the following years he discovered America for himself. He was particularly taken with the streets of New York. Over the years some of his most famous motifs were created here. His popularity increased. He organized successful solo exhibitions. More and more people were interested in buying his pictures. He married the American Serena Harington. Together the couple commuted between America, London and other worldwide destinations. Julian was booked for increasingly important commissions, for example, he painted a portrait of the Duc and Duchess by Decazes in the Polignac Palace in Venice. On the occasion of the Queen's silver throne anniversary he draws a portrait of the House of Lords. It hangs today in Westminster Abbey. Julian Barrow died on 3 September 2013. He was 74 years old.
