John William Brown

  1842
  1928
   •   Art of the 19th century   •   Wikipedia: John William Brown

Nestled in the vibrant creative heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, an artist whose ability to blend color and light was to astound England was born in 1842. John William Brown, a name synonymous with exquisite glass and painterly art, began his journey in the studios of William Bell Scott and soon discovered his deep affinity for the art that flickers inside churches and cathedrals.

As Brown moved into the hustle and bustle of London, he found himself at Morris & Co. and later became part of the renowned team at James Powell and Sons. But it wasn't just stained glass that brought him fame. His oil paintings, influenced by the Aesthetic Movement, were a testament to his diverse skills. Even after he decided to go freelance in 1886, his association with Powell's remained, and he continued to be the designer of choice for their prestigious projects. However, it is Brown's designs for the stained glass windows of Liverpool Cathedral, particularly the "Noble Women" windows and the majestic East Window, that are still considered masterpieces of art printing and design.

But Brown's artistic fingerprint is not unique to Liverpool. Chester Cathedral and its refectory glow with the colors of his designs, as do churches in Sussex. Even the Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery houses his opus sectile panels - another testament to his masterful hand. Brown's works are more than just windows or paintings; they are portals that take us into a world of color and stories. It is our goal to continue telling these stories through our high-quality fine art prints, ensuring that John William Brown's creative vision continues to inspire generations of art lovers.
