When the young Lambert was 14 years old, his mother decided to emigrate to Australia with him and his three sisters. The family went to Sydney. Afterwards George Lambert moved to London where he worked as a successful portrait painter. There he also experienced the beginning of World War I and became the first official war painter of Australia in the rank of an honorary captain.
