When the sun rose in Windschläg on September 22, 1838, the world welcomed Carl Jutz, who would later become known as a master of animal painting. Born into a modest family that produced nine children, Jutz's youth was marked by movement and change. He followed the family fate when they moved to Beuern while his father and brother made the journey to America. But fate had a different path in store for young Carl. His encounter with the Dutch painter Joseph August Knip led to a life-changing inclination toward art, especially animal painting. In 1861, Jutz ventured to Munich, a city then considered a thriving center of art. Despite the fact that he never attended an academy, he met artists such as Ludwig Willroider and Anton Braith, whose influence led him to devote himself entirely to animal painting. His travels eventually led him to Düsseldorf, where in 1868 he married Sybilla Karolina Adloff, daughter of the landscape painter Carl Adloff. His Düsseldorf home, equipped with a garden where he kept poultry, became the source of inspiration for some of his most famous works.
Jutz was a respected and successful painter in his time, whose paintings attracted much attention at exhibitions from Hamburg to Vienna, Sydney to Melbourne. His works were also appreciated and bought outside Europe, especially in England and the USA. And although he found his final resting place in Pfaffendorf on August 31, 1916, his artworks, which almost exclusively depicted feathered fowl in their chicken yards, remained a testament to his unparalleled ability to capture nature in all its splendor and accuracy. Jutz's art is characterized by an almost photographic accuracy and remarkable color intensity. Each animal has been carefully and precisely grouped in a rural scene. With particular care and attention to detail, he depicts species-specific behaviors and achieves an almost lifelike rendering of the animals. In memory of his extraordinary talent and distinctive art, we are dedicated to reproducing his work. Each of our fine art prints is a lovingly and meticulously crafted reproduction that captures the spirit and detail of Jutz's original works. With each of our high-quality reproductions, we celebrate the life and work of Carl Jutz, an artist whose passion and precision continue to inspire us today.
