C. Wilhelm

  March 21, 1858
  March 2, 1925
   •   Caricatures, Comics   •   Wikipedia: C. Wilhelm

William John Charles Pitcher is still considered an influential artist in the field of painting and stage design. The Englishman is also known as C. Wilhelm. He designed the scenery of famous ballets, pantomimes, musical comedies and operas.

In 1858 C. Wilhelm was born in Kent (England). His father worked as a shipbuilder. His promising talent for artistic creation soon made itself felt. The influential British playwright and historian James Robinson Planché encouraged him. He recommended the artist as a costume designer. Thus, the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane became aware of the young talent. C. Wilhelm created detailed costumes for performances and artists of his time. In demand as a costume designer and set designer, he also worked for the London Theatre, the Crystal Palace, and the Lyceum Theatre, to name a few. His creations were worn in two Shakespeare plays by Robert Courtneidge. Cinderella, Dick Whittington and Blue Beard are other works that became successful performances with his costumes. Among his best known works as a set designer was his work at London's Empire Theatre. He created detailed sets for ballets. William John Charles Pitcher's work was highly regarded. This was due in no small part to his multifaceted rendering of the characteristics and details of the historical periods in which the performances were set. In doing so, he interpreted the costumes and set design for the period in a modern, amusing and fantastic way. The artist showed a refreshing inventiveness in the variety of shapes and colors. William John Charles Pitcher influenced and developed the art of theater and ballet of his time with stage design and costume design.

Not only a costume designer, he also made a name for himself as a painter. Watercolor painting with a focus on flowers and plants is part of his portfolio. He illustrated numerous children's books, including the well-known work "The Child oft he Air". Costume design is an elaborate process. The realization of an idea begins with a design on paper. C. Wilhelm did not produce simple sketches, but independent works of art. These are reminiscent in style of illustrations from books. Particularly impressive are the detailed and playful costume designs of the fairy creatures. During his creative period, the artist also wrote articles for the British fine arts magazine The Magazine of Art. In the last years of his life he devoted himself more to watercolor painting. In 1925, William John Charles Pitcher died in London at the age of 66.

If you like fantastic artwork with lovely details, you will love the prints of C. Wilhelm's costume designs. The fairy creatures appear magical and powerful thanks to the beautiful colored accents. But Wilhelm's other artworks, especially the color lithographs, also make an excellent impression framed on the wall.
