The Renaissance was the golden age of fresco painting. Among its most important representatives is Benozzo di Lese di Sandro Gozzoli, born in Florence in 1420. He was a pupil of Fra Angelico, with whom he also worked on papal commissions, before he began to carry out commissions on his own at the age of 29. Gozzoli was one of the most productive fresco painters of his time. He was mainly active in Rome, Tuscany and the Umbria region.
Gozzoli's works are characterized by a great wealth of detail, vivid portraits and the reference to nature that emerged in the early Renaissance, the latter especially through the strikingly realistic depiction of landscapes. As was customary at the time, the paintings deal almost exclusively with religious themes. These include in particular scenes from the Bible, such as the Tower of Babel, the Assumption of Mary or the destruction of Sodom.
His main work, titled "Scenes from the Old Testament", is a 25-part series of frescoes on which he worked for a total of 16 years. In 1944 it fell almost completely victim to the war. In addition to a large number of frescoes, Gozzoli created various paintings and panel paintings. During his lifetime he enjoyed a high reputation and achieved great prosperity. After his death in 1478 he was buried in the church of San Domenico in Pistoia near Florence as a token of homage.
